NordVPN Not Connecting? Diagnose the Cause and Get Back Online

Diagnose NordVPN stuck on Connecting, connected with no internet, failing on one Wi-Fi network, or breaking after an update—and apply fixes in the right order.

Quick answer

First confirm normal internet works without NordVPN. Then try another server, switch between NordLynx and OpenVPN, refresh sign-in, and check Kill Switch or firewall rules. If several servers and both protocols still fail while normal internet works, test one paid alternative on the same device and network to isolate a NordVPN-specific problem; keep it only if it passes the same connection test.

NordVPN connection troubleshooter

Separate a failed tunnel, connected-with-no-internet state, one-network block, and stale adapter before choosing the fix.

1

Identify the failure

Match the visible symptom.
2

Change one thing

Retest once after the change.
3

Verify the result

Confirm the intended traffic path.
After the quick fixes fail

Do not spend another hour reinstalling the same VPN

If several servers and both NordLynx and OpenVPN fail while ordinary internet works, another reinstall may repeat the same provider-specific failure.

A same-network test with one alternative shows whether switching providers actually restores the connection.

Diagnose why NordVPN is not connecting

Choose the closest symptom. Start with reversible checks and stop once the connection works.

Recommended next check

Change server, then protocol

A single server or handshake path may be unavailable. Try a different nearby server, then switch between NordLynx and OpenVPN.

Run the ordered fixes

Fix NordVPN not connecting in the right order

Test after every step. Several simultaneous changes make it harder to identify the real cause.

  1. 1

Confirm the internet works without the VPN

Disconnect NordVPN and open two unrelated sites. If normal internet is also down, repair that connection before troubleshooting the VPN.

  2. 2

    Try another nearby server

A server can be full, under maintenance, or temporarily unreachable from your ISP route. Do not keep retrying the same endpoint.

  3. 3

    Switch protocol

Change between NordLynx and OpenVPN. On a restrictive network, OpenVPN TCP can work where a faster UDP-based route is blocked.

  4. 4

Restart the app and sign in again

Fully quit the app, reopen it, and refresh the session. Confirm that the subscription and system date/time are valid.

  5. 5

Inspect Kill Switch and security rules

Do not leave protection disabled. Confirm the app is allowed through the firewall and that Kill Switch is not preserving a stale blocked state after a failed tunnel.

  6. 6

Reinstall only after simpler checks fail

Remove the app using its supported uninstall path, restart the device, install the current version, and delete obsolete manual VPN profiles you no longer use.

NordVPN connection symptoms and likely causes

Use the combination of app status and normal-internet behavior to choose the next check.

What you seeMost likely causeBest next action
Stuck at Connecting on every serverProtocol, firewall, login, or stale adapterSwitch protocol, refresh sign-in, then repair/reinstall the VPN adapter.
Connected, websites do not loadDNS, Kill Switch, or route problemDisconnect cleanly, verify Kill Switch state, reconnect, and reset the network stack if needed.
Works on hotspot, fails on Wi-FiRouter, captive portal, or network policyComplete the portal login without VPN, then use another supported protocol.
Only one site or app failsSite block, DNS cache, or split-tunnel ruleTry another server and check app-specific routing before reinstalling the VPN.

Do not permanently disable your firewall or antivirus

If security software is involved, create a narrow allow rule for the VPN app or ask its vendor for the correct exception. Turning protection off indefinitely creates a larger problem than the failed VPN connection.

If one alternative connects on the same device and network, the failure is likely specific to NordVPN rather than the local connection.
